Angels of Austria: The Church That Reached Out To Holocaust Survivors
 
Perfect for History, Social Studies or Holocaust Education  covering many aspects World War II, because it leaves students with hope and inspiration.  English teachers can develop writing assignments around the rich topics. Jewish summer camps and Sunday school teenagers explore the history and ethics of the event and how it relates to Judaism and their own family history. Each presentation is appropriately presented to each level of education.

Creative Ways to Share 
Your Family History

IN this workshop and presentation, Judy Faust inspires students by reading excerpts from her book, displays musical family slide shows, and excerpts from recent documentaries to help them to decide what media best suits their family history. She provides tips on organizing photographs, documents, letters, videos, and interviews making it an exciting activity that students do on their own, in class, with friends, or with family members.  They will see why this project is a boon for their own self worth. This is not only educational but entertaining. Great way to kick off a history or social studies unit. Featuring clips from 
The Cat's Meow and Becoming Janet and other recent works. 


Special Presentations

Julius’s Journey (1899-1942)
Judy’s maternal grandfather begins his life in a shtetl in Galicia, goes to Vienna where he becomes a Lieutenant in World War I, begins a family, loses his wife, and spends the rest of his life in a desperate struggle for survival. Slideshows and selected readings from her book, Waltzing with Papa.

Workshops
  Discover and relate family stories to The Depression, First Immigration Wave to the United States, young people leaving their homes in search of work, war stories from World War I or II.
  Study Jewish life in Eastern Europe before Hitler: Yiddish theater, music, synagogue architecture, Jewish education and different sects of Judaism. Jewish influences in Vienna in medicine, art, music, theater, literature, sports.
 Compare the Depression period in the United States with Austria in the 1920’s.


The Seamstress Apprentice (1934-38)
Trudy Duhl (Judy’s mother), begins an arduous apprenticeship to a dressmaker in Vienna at age fifteen. As students learn about the curriculum and chores Trudy had to master, they will learn about Trudy’s revolutionary boyfriend, and view her original workbooks filled with beautiful drawings about the history of fashion in Europe! 
When Jewish refugees like Trudy came to America in the 1930’s and 40’s, they were unprepared to work in the factory sweatshops of New England. Slideshows, Interview With Trudy, and selected readings from Waltzing With Papa. Students will find plenty of teenage issues that they will relate to.

Workshops
  Conduct family interviews about how occupations change over the years affected by technology and other factors.
  Compare the New England textile industry with Trudy’s experiences in the textile industry in Austria. 
  Research the local history of a mill and the families involved.
  How does fashion describe an era? What do fashions tell us about values and beliefs? Students can draw or assemble a fashion collage.


An Immigrant's Dilemma (1938-45)
After Hitler erected barbed wire around the Danube, Trudy and her Papa stand in line for six months, hoping for exit visas. Only Trudy manages to escape to America via Holland and takes a ship to New York where she fights for survival, lives with hostile uncles, and tries to save money to rescue and ransom her Papa who is taken to a German work camp and writes letter after letter begging for help. 
This presentation focuses on all the aspects of fleeing your own country, leaving behind loved ones, living with strange relatives in a new land, learning a new language, and the particular trials the Jewish refugees had during the Holocaust. Featuring a 20 minute video interview of Trudy Faust poignantly telling her experiences as an immigrant in 1938. Also Judy reads a very dramatic excerpt from her book, Saving Papa that your students will be thrilled with.

Workshops
  Students interview and write a story about a young immigrant in their town or state. What challenges do they face? How do friends and family relationships change? What strengths or lessons are they learning? What are their dreams and hopes?
  Explore the range of hopes and disappointments of immigrants from different time periods. Use Trudy’s stories as a comparison.


The Only Jew In Neunkirchen: a visit to Aunt Herta
 in Austria
Judy initially worried about boredom when she and her mother visited 86 year old Aunt Herta in Austria in 1993, but it turned out that she was far from bored! With Herta’s stories of escape from the Nazis, her life in Palestine, and her return to her hometown after the war, plus a visit to a doll museum depicting history in miniature, this presentation is sure to intrigue students and make them want to interview their own families. Includes geography of Austria, Shanghai, Israel, Poland, and America and covers Austrian history from 1899-present. Slideshow, and selected readings from Waltzing With Papa.

Workshops
 • Students will interview an elderly relative or neighbor and write a first person story/ the experience of the interview, make a computer slide show, or create a collage about their subject’s life.
